Gwen is witty, smart, and has enough guts to take/face down a killer, but sometimes she feels like she might explode when it comes to her boss. She is not intimidated by him, nor will she back down from a verbal argument with him. But Gwen is also very sensitive, especially when it comes to the safety of her baby sister, Independence “Indy” Matthews, who is a year younger than Gwen.

Life in the deep South in 1983 was not easy for a family like the Matthews’, especially since Sawyer, an FBI agent, was away a lot on cases. But when his feisty attorney wife discovered she was having twins, he switched jobs with his partner so he could be there for the first 5 years of their lives. At one a.m. on December 2, 1983, Gwendolyn Leigh and Hunter Lawrence Matthews came howling into the world. As a child, Gwendolyn liked to read Nancy Drew, The Hardy Boys and The Bobbsey Twins and liked to put together jigsaw puzzles. Once, Sawyer allowed his older daughter to come along on one of his cases, this one involving a little girl around Gwendolyn’s age being kidnapped by her father, who the little girl hardly knew because he hadn’t known his deceased ex-wife was pregnant when they divorced. Gwendolyn talked the father into giving the little girl up, and when Sawyer & Gwen brought her home, Lucie took one look at her and fell in love. Independence “Indy” Matthews was a permanent part of the family a year later after Sawyer and Lucie adopted her. When Gwen wasn’t focusing on keeping Indy and Henry safe, she played soccer and was in ballet sports-wise and helped out at an after-school program. She and her two siblings also helped out at the local shelters, including the homeless, the animal and sometimes the nursing homes in town. The jobs were messy at times, but the Matthews’ siblings did it up until the tragedy, before Gwen wanted to quit but continued to do it until now, when she is a private, fiery FBI agent. She even encourages her fellow agents to do it along with her, and she can see that they won’t admit it, but they enjoy doing it.

One night many years later, the South had a normal heat wave in mid-summer. Indy had come to sleep in Gwendolyn’s room during a big thunderstorm, and to blot out the noise, Gwendolyn read Nancy Drew to her younger sister and was nearly halfway through it when they heard the screams of their mother coming from the other side of the big plantation they lived in. Gwen got Indy into the bathroom & locked them into it but somehow the killer got in, so Gwen hid Indy in the area under the sink. Gwen fought him off as long as she could and refused to let him get to Indy, before he finally gave up and ran out of the house. A month after the tragedy, Gwen and Indy went to live with Lucie’s sister, Phoebe Banks, in Savannah, Georgia, where Gwen learned to be tough for herself, and for Indy. In high school, Gwen was often sent home for getting into fights but still got a good education, and so did Indy. Academically, Gwen participated in the drama club, the chess club, the academic team, and played volleyball & softball. She has friends from school that she still talks to today, but not often because of her job. Gwendolyn graduated from McGregor High School with high honors, and, soon after, signed up for police Academy, choosing to follow in Sawyer’s footsteps so she could protect Indy. But Gwen is soon faced with another bump in the road, when her memory of what happened that night is haunting her, because the killer turned out to be someone from her past. The biggest influence in Gwen’s life has to be her aunt Phoebe, because if it hadn’t been for Phoebe, Gwen would have been separated from her baby sister, and she didn’t want that to happen. And she taught Gwen all about her family history, including some of which had been from Savannah. Gwen liked history, and when she wasn’t working, she took the time to write a book about her family, titled “A Step Back in Time: The Story of the Matthews’ Family”. With some of the profits she made from it, Gwen helped pay her own way through the Academy, and later bought an apartment – two-bedroom – in which she hopes she can bring Indy to come live with her.

Nowadays, Gwendolyn is a tough as nails FBI agent with a heart of gold. She was recently hired into a special branch of the FBI, called “The Protectors”, and while she hasn’t found the man who murdered her parents and twin brother, she has been hot on his trail and hopes she can catch him soon. Meanwhile, she has just come to New York in hopes of starting fresh, turning over a new leaf, as the experts say. Gwendolyn never dated in her teen years, and now that she is, she’s afraid to settle down because she hopes to go back and bring her sister to New York to live with her. Her bosses at “The Protectors” believe she would be a good match to work alongside some of the agents in the World Security Bureau also know as the WSB, and Gwendolyn agrees, therefore her reason to move to New York. She is currently single, having just broken off her most recent engagement to a District Attorney, someone that she knew when she was in the Academy. Gwendolyn and Greg Miller worked on a few cases together, but she knew he had been seeing someone behind her back, choosing to break things off in privacy rather than confront him in public. Gwen won’t admit it, but she is in love with Jordan Crenshaw, her boss, because she feels it would betray her father’s memory. Jordan and Sawyer had been partners when Sawyer was alive but Gwen feels that would be crossing the line. Her fellow agent, Byron Grisham “Byron the Kid”, knows about her secret crush, but promises not to tell their boss, because she respects his boundaries and he hers. The other agents in the group have no idea what is going on, and don’t have the time to care. Each of them has their own life, and Gwen doesn’t want them interfering with her personal life. She also feels that her friendship with Jordan would be ruined if she told him how she felt, so she is choosing to keep quiet…for now.

I felt my legs open & shut in a scissor-like motion as I jumped down from the ledge I’d been using as my stakeout point and onto a moving trash truck, feeling the sting of my landing through my hiking boots. I’d been working on a lead for a case with my boss – and sometimes partner – Jordan Crenshaw. Hearing a thud behind me, I turn to see Jordan’s familiar face with a smile on his lips. “Nice jump and landing, Gidget,” he said, his smile widening by the minute.

Jordan, who is originally from Oklahoma, had been my dad’s partner in the FBI, and taught me everything I needed to know: defending myself in a sticky situation, how to find love again, to basically survive. I didn’t know if I would classify him as my “love”, but I know this much…Jordan is my friend, my advisor and my confidant, and if I didn’t have him in my life, I probably wouldn’t even know “The Protectors”.

Jordan was the boss, and I was the tech-savvy right-hand man. Following behind me is Byron Grisham, the charismatic “ladies man” handy with a gun agent; Thomas Fields, the trigger-happy adrenaline junkie; Eva Rosales, the single mom; Isaac Newman, the kind-hearted African-American and Joseph Roberts, the new hire. Joseph and I were hired around the same time, and we have become best buds, but he has a girlfriend. I know because I introduced them right after Jordan hired us. If I wasn’t so “googly-eyed” over Jordan – Byron’s words, not mine – I would probably be with a decent guy around my age.

A few blocks away from where Jordan and I jumped onto the trash truck, he helped me down then climbed off himself. “So back to Headquarters, Boss?” I asked with a teasing smile. Sometimes he didn’t like me or anyone on the team calling him “Boss” but he smiled back anyway, a smug smile, and wrapped his arms around me, one hand resting on my dark, frazzled upswept hair, the other on a spot low enough it could move to caress my backside but high enough to not frighten me.

“When we get done with this case, and before I take you to Port Charles, I’m taking you out for a night on the town,” he vowed, just before I felt his lips caress my forehead. Byron was the only person who knew about me and Jordan, but what he didn’t know wouldn’t kill him…for once. I sighed, rested my head under Jordan’s strong chin, and thought, Port Charles, get ready to be blown away by Gwendolyn Leigh Matthews!

I can't wait to see her in action. It's great to see a FBI agent in Port Charles. Her personality sounds awesome, as well as her history. I love her history. It is very well written, as is the sample post. I like that she is attracted to her boss. It makes for a interesting storyline that I can't wait to see be played out.
